Established in 1946 by Moses G. Todd, Todd Electric Company became a major provider in the fields of motor rewind & repair, electrical contracting, and electrical supplies. This diversification allowed the company to grow and prosper for many years. In the late 70's/early 80's, the divisions were separated into independent profit centers known as Todd Marine Enterprises, Todd Electric Company. and Todd Electric Sales Company, under the corporate identity of Todd Industries. Later, amid concerns within the industry over unfair competition, the contracting/motor division was closed. Todd Marine Enterprises continued business as a "down-river" repair group. Todd Electric Sales Co. was renamed Todd Marine Electrical Supply to further identify our specialty of shipboard electrical products. Due to customer loyalty, the motor repair facility was reopened. This effort was short lived and ultimately resulted in re-closing and the sale of its assets.
In 1992, existing ownership wanted to further divest itself of holdings and offered to sell Todd Marine Electrical Supply to long time employee and VP, G. Norman Caroon. The sale was consummated in November of that year and all employees, operations, and inventory were seamlessly brought into the new organization. Because of reputation and name recognition, Todd Marine Electrical Supply continued to be our operational name of choice, this time under the corporate identity of Noran, Inc.
We remained at our 2311 Ingleside Road address until, after acquiring a suitable site in 1997, our new building was started in January and completed in July 1999. The move took place in early August, systematically by our employees, with personal and corporate resources and a trailer provided by a supportive customer. The logistics of setting up furnishings, enabling a new phone system, relocating our computer system and other components, arranging inventory, and making everything work over one weekend were overwhelming. The employees persevered and business resumed with minimal interruption the following Monday.
That was a busy year for us in that we had already accomplished a software change, forced by "Y2K", that went live in May. Orienting ourselves to the capabilities the new system provided was not an easy task. It proved to be a success by allowing for closer inventory control, real time stock counts, instant document retrieval, and expanded reporting capabilities. When our software provider approached us in 2003 and offered to set up a website, the proposal was met with skepticism although their track history was admirable. We then continued to attempt a printed catalog that was much in demand. Six months and many $'s later the website offer was renewed. By then, the realization that printed media became outdated quickly had already set in. This time, the answer was "Go" and you're looking at the results. Many enhancements have yet to be completed, but functionally, the website is finished. The rest is up to us by continuing to install product photos, vendor links, and other static pages. Any constructive input is welcome and can be addressed via the "Contact Us" link using "Sales" in the drop down menu.
